How we test what we claim
Every compatibility claim on this site comes from a test run we repeat before each release, on a fixed sample of public pins we own or that are openly licensed. This page describes the sample, the pass criteria and the failures we have not solved — so a reader can check the claims instead of trusting them.
The sample
The fixed set covers each format at least three times, from different accounts and upload dates, because Pinterest’s encoding pipeline changed several times and older pins carry different structures:
- Standard video pins, portrait and landscape
- Idea Pins with 1, 3 and 8+ pages
- Carousels mixing image and video slides
- Image pins in JPG and PNG, including one above 2000 px
- Animated pins originally uploaded as GIF
- Pins that only serve HLS
- Pins from at least three country domains (.com, .co.uk, .com.br) and pin.it short links
We do not test against private pins belonging to other people, and we do not test against content we have no rights to.
What counts as a pass
A case passes only when all four hold:
- The file downloads without an error
- It opens in VLC and in the OS default player
- The audio track is present when the pin has sound
- The resolution matches the variant that was selected
A 1 KB .m3u8, a silent file whose source has audio, or a resolution below what was chosen — all failures, even when the download itself "succeeded".
Known failures, unresolved
Listed here rather than hidden, because they are exactly what a reader needs to decide whether this tool fits:
| Case | Status | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Private pins on the website | Will not fix | A server has no session; the extension covers it |
| Region-restricted pins | Open | The CDN refuses from some regions; no workaround that is not evasion |
| Deleted pins | Will not fix | The media is gone |
| 4K output | Will not fix | Pinterest stores no 4K variant for pins |
| Removing a burned-in watermark | Will not fix | It would mean altering the video and erasing attribution |
| Firefox / Safari extension | Planned | Different extension format; not started |
How often this is refreshed
Before every extension release, and at least once a quarter regardless. The date at the top of each page is the last time the claims on that page were re-verified — not the date the file was rebuilt.
When a result changes, the table changes with it and the change is written down in the changelog. We do not silently correct a claim.
