Why your GIF comes back as MP4
The GIF format is from 1987. It caps at 256 colours and compresses badly, so a five-second clip can weigh 8 MB as GIF and 700 KB as MP4 — with better colour. Every large platform, Pinterest included, converts uploaded GIFs to video on ingest and serves the video.

When you genuinely need a .gif file
A few places still demand the extension: some forum signatures, a handful of email tools, old CMS uploaders. In those cases convert the MP4 you downloaded — any converter does it in seconds and you keep control of frame rate and palette.
