Download animated pins and GIFs

Paste an animated pin link and PinCrate returns the file Pinterest hosts. Expect an MP4 rather than a .gif: Pinterest converts most uploaded GIFs to video, which is how the platform serves them to you as well. Same animation, roughly ten times smaller, plays in every app.

Accepts links from pinterest.com, any country domain, and pin.it

Why your GIF comes back as MP4

The GIF format is from 1987. It caps at 256 colours and compresses badly, so a five-second clip can weigh 8 MB as GIF and 700 KB as MP4 — with better colour. Every large platform, Pinterest included, converts uploaded GIFs to video on ingest and serves the video.

So the honest answer is: the “original GIF” is usually gone before you ever see the pin. What we hand over is the file Pinterest actually stores, which is the same animation at higher quality. Any tool giving you back a .gif re-encoded it, losing colour and multiplying the size.

When you genuinely need a .gif file

A few places still demand the extension: some forum signatures, a handful of email tools, old CMS uploaders. In those cases convert the MP4 you downloaded — any converter does it in seconds and you keep control of frame rate and palette.

We do not run conversion server-side on purpose. It would mean holding your file long enough to transcode it, which contradicts the part where nothing is stored.

Truly static pins

If the pin does not animate, it is an ordinary image and the image downloader is the page you want — you will get the full-resolution original instead of a video file.

Frequently asked questions

Why did I get an MP4 when I asked for a GIF?

Because that is what Pinterest stores. It converts uploaded GIFs to video, so the MP4 is the closest thing to the original file that exists on the platform.

Does the animated pin have sound?

Usually not — it started life as a GIF, which cannot carry audio. If the author uploaded a video instead, the sound comes with it.

How do I turn it back into a GIF?

Use any MP4-to-GIF converter on the file you downloaded. Keep it short: GIF gets very heavy past a few seconds.
